Procrastination… why we do it..
Why do we procrastinate? I do it sometimes. And it finally became clear to me, why I do it. Maybe you can relate to it as well:
I procrastinate the things I do not know how to do! It is really as simple as that! I thought about it one day, and I thought, well I do a lot of things during a day, and I get right to them because I can do them with ease. Then there are the things I stay clear of, and try to avoid doing, and they are the things that I either don’t know how to do or they are things where I need some information from someone else, before I can do them.
I then thought: well, my second step into procrastination is not taking the time to find out HOW that “thing” is done. And I thought, there really are only two ways to get the thing done: either a) sit down, take the time and find out how to do it, or b) get help from someone who knows how. That’s it!
And often, all it takes is a little focus, after which you find out that you are actually able to do it, and it wasn’t so bad after all!
This may seem very logical and obvious to someone who never procrastinates – but to me it felt like an epiphany; like coming out of a ‘procrastination wormhole’!
Now that I have realised the ‘mechanics’ of why and how I procrastinate, I am actually able to feel more compassion towards my own ‘inner conflict’. I feel that it is resolved and that I have released it. I can forgive myself and I only feel like saying “Roll on, next potential procrastination project”, so that I can show it that I am ready to find out how to handle it, and then get it done! Out of the way!
